Play iPhone voice memo in loop

If you’re looking to play recorded iPhone voice memo (E.g memo1) in repeat you are at the right place!

Firstly, it’s not possible to do within the voice memo app but you can play it using VLC player.

Step 1 – Download and install ‘VLC Player‘ from App Store.

Step 2 – Open ‘Voice Memos’ app on your iPhone and select the memo from the list (tap on it to see the options).

Step 3 – Click on the three dots and select share (this will bring up sharing options).

Step 4 – From the app list to share, select ‘VLC’. If you don’t see the app on the list, scroll to left and click ‘More’ to see all the apps and then select ‘VLC’.

Step 5 – This will open up ‘VLC Player’ and play the voice memo. Pause play and tab on the three dots you see on the same screen which sits along with play controls (this will bring up play options). And then select the first option from top to enable repeat mode.

That’s it.

If you want to automate it, then make use of iPhone ‘Shortcuts App’.

Step 1 – Download ‘Dropbox‘ from App Store and set it up with an email account. And then upload the voice memo that you want to loop and make a note of the file name. (I’ll explain why Dropbox below)

Step 2 – On your iPhone, search for ‘Shortcuts’ and open it. Under ‘All Shortcuts’, click the ‘+’ sign to create a new shortcut.

Step 3 – Select ‘Add Action’, and then search for ‘Get File’ action and tab to add.

Step 4 – Tab on the ‘Service’ option and make sure ‘Dropbox’ is selected. You could use ‘iCloud’ but it wouldn’t let you save any files in there instead only ‘Shortcuts App’ has access to save files in it.

If you don’t want to use ‘Dropbox’ there is a sneaky way to do it. Here is how,

Skip Step 4 and follow until Step 3 > under ‘Service’ select ‘Dropbox’ and turn off ‘Show Document Picker’ (this will allow you to select the file) > under ‘File Path’ enter the name of the memo you saved in Step 1 > you can leave ‘Error If Not Found’ on > then click the ‘+’ sign below > and then search for ‘Save File’ action and tab to add > under ‘Service’ select ‘iCloud Drive’ and turn off ‘Ask Where to Save’ (this will allow you define where to save the file) > under ‘Destination Path’ enter the name of the memo you saved in Step 1 > turn ‘On’ / ‘Off’ option ‘Overwrite If File Exists’ as you wish > and then run the ‘Shortcut’ > this will save a copy of the memo from ‘Dropbox’ to ‘iCloud Drive’.

You can save the Sneaky ‘Shortcut’ if you intend to use it in future otherwise just cancel the task. Also you can delete the memo file from ‘Dropbox’. Now you can start from beginning and select ‘iCloud Drive’ in Step 4 instead of ‘Dropbox’ and continue the rest of the process.

Let’s continue,

Step 5 – No matter what you select (Dropbox/ iCloud Drive) in Step 4 it wouldn’t effect this step. Click the ‘+’ sign below and search for ‘Play Sound’ action and tab to add.

Step 6 – Click the ‘+’ sign below and search for ‘Repeat’ action and tab to add.

Step 7 – Let’s change how many times the memo will need to repeat. Tab on ‘1 time’ and this will allow you to increase the numbers. This will be based on your memo play length and of course how many times you want it to repeat.

Step 8 – If you want to test it, tab on the triangle run button below. If you’re happy with the ‘Shortcut’ click ‘Next’ button on top right side corner of the screen. Give it a name (E.g play the memo) and click ‘Done’.

Step 9 – Now you should see the ‘Shortcut’ under ‘All Shortcuts’ list and ready to be actioned.

Step 10 – You can add it as a ‘Widget’ on your Home Screen and run it manually or just leave as it is and ask Siri to run it for you. E.g Just say ‘Hey Siri, play the memo’ and Siri will run it for you.

If you don’t want to get into the setup process, just download the Shortcuts i have shared below and follow the instructions in comment section. Before you import the Shortcut, you need to enable untrusted Shortcuts to run on your iPhone.

Here is how,

Under ‘Settings’ find ‘Shortcuts’ and tab to open it > enable ‘Allow Untrusted Shortcuts’ and click allow. It will ask you to run a ‘Shortcut’ first and you can use any of the default ‘Shortcuts’ to run.

Once enabled, download the ‘Shortcuts’ below and save it.
